Is the VI Peel Right for You?

Is the VI Peel Right for You?

Many of our Houston-area patients at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa have inquired about the Vi Peel. The Vi Peel is a medium-depth chemical peel that has gained widespread popularity recently for its ability to improve skin tone and quality and maintain clear, healthy, radiant skin.

The Vi Peel gently exfoliates the skin’s outermost layers and reveals fresh new skin underneath. The Vi Peel makes skin smoother, brighter, more luminous and can reduce the appearance of surface imperfections such as acne scars and discoloration.

Chemical peels have been in use for several decades. They are used to improve the appearance of aging skin, reduce the effects of sun damage, and diminish the appearance of some surface imperfections such as age spots. The Vi Peel is also effective against acne and helps mitigate the appearance of acne scars.

Who is the best candidate for a Vi Peel?

The best candidates for the VI Peel are individuals who have fair to medium skin tone and seek to improve mild to moderate skin concerns, such as acne, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles, minor discoloration, and other visible signs of aging and sun damage. The Vi Peel is not recommended for individuals with darker skin tones because there is an increased risk of hyperpigmentation.

What conditions does the Vi Peel treat?

The Vi Peel is used to improve uneven skin tone and texture, reduce the appearance of sun damage, minimize the visible signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, and improve the skin’s firmness and radiance. The Vi Peel is especially effective at improving the following conditions:

  • Acne and acne scars
  • Other minor scars and surface imperfections
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Skin that has a dull cast as a result of sun damage
  • Clogged pores

How does the Vi Peel Work?

Chemical peels work by chemically exfoliating the skin’s outermost layers, revealing healthy new skin cells and radiant, renewed skin. Peels come in different strengths, and depending on the ingredients, they can improve sun damage and irregularities in pigmentation, acne, acne scars, and even wrinkles and fine lines.

Medium depth peels such as the Vi Peel are less aggressive than deeper chemical peels based on ingredients such as phenol which achieve a deeper level of penetration.

The Vi Peel is formulated with mild concentrations of phenol, salicylic acid, TCA, retinoic acid, and vitamin C. This medium-grade level of penetration provides a more vigorous exfoliation than a light superficial peel, but allows for a shorter recovery period than a deep peel. For many candidates, the Vi Peel is a great way to maintain healthy and radiant skin and keep acne and minor discoloration at bay.

What to expect when getting a Vi Peel

When applying a Vi Peel, our trained medical aestheticians will cleanse the skin thoroughly to remove all dirt and oils from the skin’s surface. Next, the Vi Peel solution is applied to the skin in two applications. Patients often feel slight stinging once the first layer is initially applied, and some patients report a mild numbing sensation.

The second layer is applied shortly afterward and left on the skin until the skin begins to “frost,” a sign that the outermost layers of skin are gently lifting away. The Vi Peel is gentle enough not to require a neutralizing solution after the peel is finished.

You will be sent home with the solution applied to your face and instructed to gently wash off the solution about 5-6 hours after treatment, and at least one hour before bedtime. Our aestheticians will also provide you with a post-care kit to use following treatment. Your skin will begin to peel after about three days following the treatment, and the process will last approximately four days, completing the treatment about seven days after application.

You will be free to resume normal activities immediately after your Vi Peel treatment but are advised to refrain from strenuous exercise and sun exposure during the period while the skin is peeling. Avoiding sun exposure by wearing a hat and using a good sunblock with a minimum of SPF 30 is always a good recommendation, particularly for those who like to keep their skin glowing through the use of chemical peels.
