A Woman’s Prerogative
Back in the day, there was a popular saying that stated: “It’s a woman’s prerogative to change her mind.” And the breast augmentation process is no exception to this rule. There are plenty of reasons why a woman may choose to change her mind and remove breast implants or trade them for new ones after a breast augmentation procedure.
Occasionally, an implant may rupture or shift position, triggering such concerns as capsular contracture, which causes the breasts to become hard and rigid. In these cases, the implant must be removed or exchanged. Or a woman may choose to trade in one type of implant for another, such as replacing saline with silicone or vice versa. Surgical breast implant removal may also be performed to amend a breast enhancement procedure by using a different size or shape implant.
Still, others may elect to have breast implants removed entirely. In these cases, a breast lift procedure may address the problem of sagging skin after implant removal.
How Is Breast Implant Removal Preformed?
The surgical breast implant removal procedure will be very similar to the original breast augmentation procedure, requiring a simple surgery typically performed with general anesthesia. Dr. Bachilo will use the same incisions used during your augmentation surgery to remove the old implants and insert the new ones, in order to prevent additional scarring.
What to Expect During Breast Implant Removal Recovery?
Once you are released from the hospital, you will need to have a friend or relative drive you home and provide at-home care so that you may rest properly and fully for at least two to three days before resuming any physical activity.
It is normal to have tenderness and swelling around the site of the incisions, and Dr. Bachilo will prescribe pain medication to help you manage the discomfort of those first few days. You will also have to wear a compressive bra to optimize healing, support sensitive breast tissue, protect the surgical site from any potential impact, and assist the body in adapting to its new shape.
The full recovery period lasts about three to four weeks. You must wear the compressive bra and limit your physical activity during this period. You must specifically refrain from vigorous twisting or movement of the upper body, bending, lifting – and in particular overhead lifting – or any other strenuous or taxing physical activity. Once all swelling has subsided, you may gradually return to normal activity and exercise.
