IPL Hair Removal: Effective Alternative to Laser in Houston TX
WHAT TO EXPECT
The Benefits of IPL Hair Removal Technology
Intense pulsed light (IPL) is a technology that works by directing a wavelength of light into the skin, which targets pigment or color, is then absorbed by the pigment, and quickly heats and kills growing hair follicles. Hair removal using IPL technology is sometimes referred to as photoepilation.
IPL systems use the same technological principle as lasers, by directing light energy into chromophores, or light-absorbing components, in hair or skin cells. The pulsed light is converted to heat, which kills living cells in the target area, in this case in living hair follicles. IPL systems differ from laser treatments in that IPL delivers multiple wavelengths (or a full spectrum of color) in each pulse, instead of a single wavelength as transmitted by lasers. Most IPL treatment systems utilize filters to customize the energy output to more effectively treat specific areas, improving penetration, and enabling the treatment to target specific chromophores.
The Venus Versa™ Hair Removal Procedure
The Venus Versa™ applies broad-spectrum light energy to the skin’s surface, targeting melanin. This energy penetrates the skin until it encounters the bulb or root of the hair shaft, in which the greatest concentration of melanin is typically found. As the bulb absorbs the light, it becomes heated to the point of destroying the living hair follicle.
IPL hair removal treatments must be repeated every 4 to 6 weeks because each treatment can only target the hair follicles that are actively growing at any given time. Since not all hair follicles are active simultaneously, hair follicles not treated in one treatment may be treated in a later treatment once they become active. Typically, about 6–8 treatments will be required to remove the majority of visible hair follicles in any region. Over time, IPL treatments will permanently destroy a large quantity of hair follicles, reducing the total number of hairs in the treatment area. IPL treatments just as other laser technologies are technically considered a “permanent hair reduction” treatment instead of a “permanent hair removal” treatment, because while they may reduce the quantity of living hair follicles in most areas, these treatments will not achieve a permanent removal of all hair in any area.
Some dermatologic conditions, health concerns, and certain medications may affect a person’s eligibility for IPL hair removal treatments. Most IPL and laser hair removal treatments achieve the best results when used on people with light to medium complexions and coarse, dark hair.
