Balanced Features. Confident Results.
Refine Ear Shape With Lasting Results
Ears play an important role in overall facial balance and symmetry. When the ears protrude noticeably, appear uneven, are disproportionately large, or have congenital or injury-related deformities, they can draw attention away from other facial features. This may be especially noticeable for patients with short hairstyles, thinning hair, or hairstyles that leave the ears exposed.
Otoplasty, also known as ear pinning surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the shape, position, proportion, or symmetry of the ears. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and goals, otoplasty may reduce the prominence of ears that sit too far from the head, improve asymmetry between the ears, reshape areas of cartilage, reduce overly large ears, or correct certain ear deformities.
During the procedure, Dr. Olga Bachilo carefully reshapes or repositions the ear cartilage to create a more natural-looking contour while maintaining harmony with the rest of the face. The goal is not to make the ears look artificial or overly close to the head, but rather to create a balanced, proportionate appearance that complements the patient’s natural features.
Otoplasty can be performed for both children and adults. Children are often candidates once the ears have developed sufficiently, typically around age 6 or older, while adults may choose surgery at any age if they are bothered by ear prominence, asymmetry, or changes in appearance. For many patients, otoplasty provides long-lasting improvement in ear shape and positioning, helping them feel more comfortable and confident in photos, hairstyles, and everyday life.

During your consultation, Dr. Bachilo will ask you about your concerns, your medical history and will examine your ears. She will then be able to recommend whether you are a good candidate for otoplasty procedure and will discuss the benefits and risks associated with ear pinning surgery.
If you decide to pursue surgery, you will be given instructions to get ready for your procedure. For your safety and best results, Dr. Bachilo will advise you to stop taking any medications which may increase your bleeding during surgery. If you smoke, she will advise you to stop smoking for this elective procedure. You will have an opportunity to ask all your questions to make the best decision and feel confident to proceed with the operation.
Otoplasty is performed in an outpatient surgery center with general anesthesia. The surgery takes about 1 to 2 hours and you will go home after a short recovery. There are several different techniques available for the correction of different ear deformities and the technique used will depend on the type of deformity being corrected.
Most incisions will be placed behind the ear and well hidden from view. The shaping of the ear will be done through the removal of part of the ear cartilage and/or reshaping of the cartilage through folding and stitching. Dr. Bachilo will perform the necessary steps in order to deliver you the best results. Incisions behind the ear will be closed with absorbable sutures or permanent sutures and dressings and compressive bandages will be applied.
After surgery, it is normal to experience some ear swelling and bruising and will take several weeks to subside. Pain is usually minimal. It is also normal to experience some numbness to your ears immediately after surgery. You will be given detailed instructions on how to care for your ears.
You will need to wear a compressive headband to protect your ears and reduce swelling. You should sleep with your head elevated on several pillows and may use ice to your ears to further decrease the swelling. You should be able to return to work in just a few days and resume all your normal activities within 2 to 3 weeks.
Otoplasty can create a more balanced and symmetrical facial appearance by improving the position, shape, or prominence of the ears. For patients who have felt self-conscious about their ears for years, this procedure can provide meaningful improvement in confidence and comfort with their appearance.
Many patients are very pleased with their otoplasty results, which are typically long-lasting. Incisions are usually placed discreetly behind the ears, allowing scars to remain well hidden as they heal. While every patient heals differently, the goal is a natural-looking result that blends smoothly with the rest of the facial features.
