Breast Augmentation: No-Touch Technique

Breast Augmentation: No-Touch Technique

One of the reasons Dr. Olga Bachilo at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in the Houston, TX area has had such success in obtaining fabulous results with a minimal complication rate when performing breast augmentation procedures is the fact that Dr. Bachilo uses the Keller Funnel approach to breast augmentation.

What is the Keller Funnel and How Does it Work?

The Keller Funnel is an FDA-approved device that plastic surgeons use to facilitate safer breast augmentation procedures with better results through the more efficient insertion of silicone gel implants. The Keller Funnel is a flexible bag that resembles the bags used by bakers for decorating cakes and contains a soft funnel tip like the tip used to apply frosting to cakes. The gel implant is inserted inside the bag, which is lined with a slippery gel that allows the surgeon to insert the implant without touching it, which is why this technique is called the “No-Touch” technique.  The bag’s soft, flexible funnel tip is also lubricated with this slippery gel and is inserted gently into the incision. The surgeon can easily position the gel implant into the breast pocket by gently squeezing the funnel bag and releasing the implant into its position.

What are the Advantages of the No-Touch Technique?

The Keller Funnel provides 6 important advantages over traditional surgical methods used during the insertion of breast implants:

  1. The Keller funnel allows for smaller incisions, which provide more options for the surgeon when positioning the implant, less scarring for the patient, and quicker healing and recovery.
  2. The sterile No-Touch method reduces the risk of infection. The Keller Funnel’s use minimizes the risk of contamination of the implant shell, which greatly reduces the risk of infection occasionally associated with breast implantation procedures.
  3. By minimizing the risk of bacterial contamination, the No-Touch method also reduces the risk of capsular contracture, which is one of the most common complications associated with breast implants’ insertion.
  4. The No-Touch technique also minimizes trauma to breast tissue since there is no direct manual manipulation of the breast tissue. This results in a shorter recovery process as well as reduced pain and discomfort associated with post-operative recovery.
  5. The Keller Funnel’s use also reduces the gel implant’s impact, which reduces the likelihood of implant rupture. Use of the funnel reduces about 95% of the force exerted on each implant during the procedure, extending the implant’s life.
  6. The No-Touch method is also faster than the traditional manual insertion of implants. This reduces the duration of the surgical procedure, which reduces impact to the body and post-operative stress for the patient.
