Aging is a natural process that everyone experiences, but certain facial changes can make you look older than you actually are. Although our genes play a substantial role in how we age, environmental factors, lifestyle choices, and skincare habits also influence our appearance. Understanding these factors can help you take steps to maintain a youthful look. In this blog, we will explore the top facial changes that can make you look older than you are and how to address them.

  1. Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Causes:

Wrinkles and fine lines are among the most common and noticeable signs of aging. They typically appear around the eyes, mouth, and forehead. Several factors contribute to their formation, including:

  • Sun Exposure: Ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun break down collagen and elastin fibers in the skin, leading to premature wrinkles.
  • Repetitive Facial Expressions: Smiling, frowning, and squinting can cause dynamic lines to form due to repetitive muscle contractions.
  • Smoking: It reduces blood flow, depriving the skin of oxygen and essential nutrients, leading to a dull, uneven complexion. Additionally, the chemicals in cigarettes damage collagen and elastin, accelerating the formation of wrinkles and lines.
  • Natural Aging: As we age, the skin loses its elasticity and ability to retain moisture, leading to wrinkles.

Solutions:

To reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, consider these options:

  • Sun Protection: Wear sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day, reapplying every 90 minutes, if out in the sun especially, to protect your skin from harmful UV rays.
  • Skincare Products: Use anti-aging products such as, ZO Skin Health, containing retinoids, hyaluronic acid, and topical antioxidants to promote collagen production, help protect from environmental factors and hydrate the skin.
  • Cosmetic Treatments: Neurotoxins (Botox, Dysport, Xeomin) and dermal fillers can temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Skin resurfacing to stimulate collagen and elastin with Microneedling RF or Venus Viva can also improve skin texture and tone.
  1. Loss of Volume

Causes:

As you age, you may notice a loss of volume in your face, particularly in the cheeks, temples, and under-eye area. This can lead to a hollow, sunken appearance.

  • Fat Loss: The natural loss of fat in the face can result in sagging skin and a less youthful look.
  • Bone Resorption: The bones in your face also shrink and change shape over time, contributing to volume loss.
  • Collagen Decline: Reduced collagen production leads to less firm and plump skin.

Solutions:

To restore lost volume, consider these approaches:

  • Dermal Fillers: Injectable hyaluronic acid fillers (RHA, Restylane, Versa) can restore volume to areas such as the cheeks and under eyes, providing a youthful contour. Recently biostimulators, such as Sculptra, Renuva, and Radiesse, have become a more popular options because of their longevity.
  • Fat Grafting: This procedure involves transferring fat from one part of your body to your face to restore volume naturally.
  • Skincare: Products, like Defenage, containing peptides, retinoids, SPF, antioxidants, and growth factors can help boost collagen production and improve skin elasticity.
  1. Sagging Skin

Causes:

Sagging skin is another common sign of aging that can make you look older. It often occurs due to a combination of factors:

  • Gravity: Over time, gravity pulls the skin downward, causing it to sag.
  • Loss of Elasticity: As collagen and elastin fibers degrade, the skin becomes less firm and more prone to sagging.
  • Weight Fluctuations: Significant weight loss or gain can stretch the skin, leading to sagging.

Solutions:

To combat sagging skin, consider these treatments:

  • Facelift: A surgical facelift can tighten and lift sagging skin for a more youthful appearance.
  • Non-Surgical Treatments: Emface, and radiofrequency treatments like Exilis, can stimulate collagen production and tighten the skin without surgery.
  • Skincare: Incorporate products with retinoids and peptides to help improve skin firmness and elasticity.
  1. Hyperpigmentation and Age Spots

Causes:

Hyperpigmentation, including age spots and dark patches, can make your skin look older. These changes are often caused by:

  • Sun Exposure: Spending too much time in the sun, may lead to dark spots and uneven skin tone.
  • Hormonal Changes: Taking birth control pills, being pregnant, and menopause can cause melasma, a type of hyperpigmentation.
  • Inflammation: Skin injuries, acne, or other inflammatory conditions can result in post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Solutions:

To address hyperpigmentation and age spots, try these options:

  • Sun Protection: Consistent use of medical grade sunscreen, such as EltaMD, is crucial to prevent further extrinsic pigmentation.
  • Topical Treatments: Products containing ingredients like vitamin C, niacinamide, tranexamic acid, and hydroquinone can help lighten dark spots and even out skin tone.
  • Professional Treatments: Chemical peels, Intense Pulse Light (IPL), and Venus Viva can effectively reduce hyperpigmentation and promote a more even complexion.
  1. Dry and Dull Skin

Causes:

Dry, dull skin can make you look older by emphasizing fine lines and giving your complexion a tired appearance. Factors contributing to dry skin include:

  • Decreased Oil Production: As you age, your skin produces less oil, leading to dryness.
  • Environmental Factors: Cold weather, wind, and low humidity can strip moisture from your skin.
  • Improper Skincare: Harsh cleansers, over-exfoliation, and lack of hydration can worsen dryness.

Solutions:

To improve dry and dull skin, consider these strategies:

  • Hydration: Drink plenty of water and use a moisturizer suitable for your skin type to maintain hydration.
  • Cleansing: Use mild cleansers and avoid over-exfoliating to preserve your skin’s natural oils. See your medical aesthetician on monthly basis, so they make recommendations and perform a Hydrafacial MD treatment to nourish your skin with peptides, vitamins, and hydration.
  • Skincare Ingredients: Look for products with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides to help lock in moisture and restore a healthy glow.
  1. Changes in Facial Contours

Causes:

Changes in facial contours, such as jowls and a less defined jawline, can contribute to an older appearance. These changes are influenced by:

  • Gravity: The effects of gravity over time can alter facial contours.
  • Fat Redistribution: As you age, fat may shift from the cheeks to the lower face, leading to jowls and a less defined jawline.
  • Muscle Atrophy: Reduced muscle tone can affect the appearance of facial contours.

Solutions:

To address changes in facial contours, explore these options:

  • Non-Surgical Treatments: Emface for submental area and jowls, radiofrequency such as Exilis, can help tighten and tone the skin without surgery.
  • Fillers: Fillers can help by adding volume to areas like the cheeks, jawline, and chin, creating a more defined and balanced facial structure. They can also smooth out fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing overall facial symmetry and youthful appearance.
  • Surgical Procedures: A lower facelift or neck lift can provide more dramatic and long-lasting results for a defined jawline and improved facial contours.

Aging is an inevitable process, but understanding the factors that contribute to looking older can help you take proactive steps to maintain a youthful appearance. By addressing them early on, you can achieve a more vibrant and youthful look. Whether through skincare products, non-surgical treatments, or surgical procedures, there are numerous options available to help you look as young as you feel. Always consult with a qualified board-certified plastic surgeon to determine the best approach for your specific needs and goals.

Breast implants have been a popular cosmetic surgery option for many women seeking to enhance their appearance or restore the shape of their breasts. However, there comes a time when some women might consider removing their breast implants. This decision can be driven by various factors, including health concerns, lifestyle changes, or simply a shift in personal preferences. If you are considering breast implant removal, it is essential to be well-informed about the process, the reasons, and the potential outcomes. Here are five crucial things you need to know.

  1. Understand the Reasons for Breast Implant Removal

Before deciding to remove your breast implants, it is important to understand why you are considering this procedure. Here are some common reasons:

Health Concerns

Some women experience complications or health issues related to their breast implants, such as:

  • Capsular Contracture: This is a condition where the scar tissue that forms around the implant hardens and tightens, causing pain and discomfort.
  • Implant Rupture or Leakage: Over time, implants can rupture or leak, leading to changes in breast shape and potential health risks.
  • Breast Implant Illness (BII): Some women report experiencing a range of systemic symptoms, such as chronic fatigue, joint pain, and brain fog, which they attribute to their implants.

Aesthetic Preferences

Personal preferences can change over time, and some women may decide that they no longer desire the augmented look that breast implants provide. Others might seek a more natural appearance or want to change the size or shape of their breasts.

Lifestyle Changes

Changes in lifestyle, such as increased physical activity, pregnancy, or significant weight fluctuations, can impact how breast implants feel and look. Some women find that their implants no longer fit their lifestyle or body image.

Aging and Implant Longevity

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons states that implants typically last between 10 to 20 years. As women age, they may choose to remove or replace their implants to address changes in their body and the longevity of the implants.

  1. Know the Types of Implant Removal Procedures

There are several types of breast implant removal procedures, and the best option for you depends on your specific situation and goals. Here are the main types:

Simple Removal

This procedure involves removing the implants without any additional surgery. It is a straightforward process, often chosen by women who are happy with their natural breast shape and size after implant removal.

Implant Removal with Capsulectomy

In some cases, it is necessary to remove the scar tissue capsule that has formed around the implant. A total capsulectomy involves removing the entire capsule, while a partial capsulectomy removes only a portion of the capsule. This procedure is typically recommended for women experiencing capsular contracture or other complications.

Implant Removal with Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

For women concerned about sagging or excess skin after implant removal, combining the removal with a breast lift can help reshape and lift the breasts to achieve a more youthful and natural appearance. This procedure involves removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue.

Implant Removal with Replacement

Some women choose to replace their old implants with new ones, either due to complications with the current implants or simply to update their appearance. This can involve changing the size, shape, or type of implant.

  1. Understand the Recovery Process

Recovery from breast implant removal varies depending on the type of procedure performed and individual factors such as age, health, and the extent of surgery. Here are some general points about the recovery process:

Immediate Post-Operative Period

  • Pain and Discomfort: It is normal to experience some pain and discomfort in the first few days following surgery. Pain management will be provided by your surgeon, and most patients can manage their pain with prescribed medications.
  • Swelling and Bruising: Swelling and bruising are common and typically subside after a week or two. Special support bra is usually recommended by your surgeon that can help minimize swelling, as well as pain.

Healing and Downtime

  • Activity Restrictions: You will need to avoid strenuous activities and heavy lifting for several weeks. Light activities and walking are encouraged to promote circulation and healing.
  • Follow-Up Appointments: Consistent follow-up appointments with your surgeon are crucial for monitoring your healing progress and addressing any concerns.

Long-Term Recovery

  • Scarring: Incisions will leave scars, which typically fade over time but may not disappear completely. Your surgeon will provide guidance on scar care and treatments to minimize their appearance.
  • Final Results: It may take several months for your breasts to settle into their final shape and appearance. Be patient and follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions for the best results.
  1. Consider the Potential Risks and Complications

As with any surgical procedure, breast implant removal carries certain risks and potential complications. It is important to be aware of these and discuss them with your surgeon. Some possible risks include:

Infection

Infection is a risk with any surgery, although it is relatively rare with breast implant removal. Signs of infection include redness, increased pain, and fever. Prompt medical attention is crucial if you suspect an infection.

Changes in Breast Sensation

Changes in breast sensation, such as numbness or heightened sensitivity, can occur after implant removal. These changes are often temporary but can be permanent in some cases.

Aesthetic Concerns

The appearance of your breasts after implant removal may not meet your expectations. Issues such as sagging, asymmetry, or an undesirable shape can occur, especially if no additional procedures like a breast lift are performed.

  1. Choose the Right Surgeon

Selecting an experienced and board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Olga Bachilo, is crucial for achieving the best possible outcome from your breast implant removal. Here are some tips for choosing the right surgeon:

Verify Credentials

Ensure that your surgeon is board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery or an equivalent certifying body. This certification ensures that the plastic surgeon has undergone extensive training and adheres to high standards of practice.

Hair loss is a common issue that affects millions of people worldwide, impacting not only physical appearance but also emotional well-being and self-confidence. Fortunately, advancements in medical science have led to innovative treatments that can effectively address this problem. One such revolutionary treatment is Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) injections. This blog delves into how PRP injections combat hair loss, offering a detailed exploration of the science behind the treatment, its benefits, the procedure, and what patients can expect.

UNDERSTANDING HAIR LOSS

Hair loss, or alopecia, can result from various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, medical conditions, and environmental factors. Androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as male or female pattern baldness, is the most prevalent form of hair loss. This hereditary condition leads to the gradual thinning of hair, primarily affecting the scalp.

Other causes of hair loss include:

  • Hormonal imbalances: Conditions like thyroid disorders and hormonal changes during pregnancy or menopause.
  • Medical conditions: Scalp infections, autoimmune diseases like alopecia areata, and certain medications.
  • Stress and lifestyle factors: High-stress levels, poor nutrition, and unhealthy hair care practices.
  • Aging: Natural aging processes that lead to hair thinning and loss.

THE SCIENCE BEHIND PRP INJECTIONS

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy is a regenerative hair treatment that leverages the body’s natural healing capabilities. PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, which is processed to concentrate the platelets. Platelets are rich in growth factors and proteins that promote tissue repair and regeneration.

HOW PRP WORKS FOR HAIR RESTORATION

PRP contains growth factors that stimulate the activity of hair follicles and promote new hair growth. The key mechanisms through which PRP combats hair loss include:

  • Enhancing blood supply: PRP increases blood flow to the hair follicles, providing essential nutrients and oxygen to support healthy hair growth.
  • Extending the growth phase: Hair growth occurs in cycles, with each follicle undergoing a growth phase (anagen), a transitional phase (catagen), and a resting phase (telogen). PRP helps prolong the anagen phase, resulting in more extended periods of hair growth.
  • Promoting cell proliferation: The growth factors in PRP stimulate the proliferation of dermal papilla cells, which play a crucial role in hair formation and growth.
  • Reducing inflammation: PRP has anti-inflammatory properties that help create a healthy environment for hair follicles, preventing damage and promoting regrowth.

THE PRP INJECTION PROCEDURE

The process of PRP injections for hair loss involves several steps, each meticulously designed to ensure optimal results.

Step 1: Consultation and Assessment

Before undergoing PRP treatment, a thorough consultation with a qualified medical professional who was certified in this procedure, such as Dr. Bachilo, is essential. During this consultation, the doctor will:

  • Evaluate the patient’s medical history and hair loss condition
  • Determine the suitability of PRP therapy based on individual factors
  • Discuss the expected outcomes and set realistic expectations
  • The before photos will be taken prior to the procedure

Step 2: Blood Collection

The procedure begins with drawing a small amount of the patient’s blood, typically from the arm. This step is like a routine blood test. To ensure this step is performed quickly and efficiently, drinking plenty of fluids prior to the procedure is vital.

Step 3: Processing the Blood

The collected blood is placed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins at high speeds to separate the blood components. This process concentrates the platelets, resulting in PRP, which contains a high concentration of growth factors.

Step 4: Preparing the Scalp

Before the PRP is injected, the scalp is thoroughly cleaned and numbed with a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort during the procedure.

Step 5: PRP Injection

Using a fine needle, the PRP is injected into the areas of the scalp experiencing hair loss. The injections are strategically placed to target the hair follicles and maximize the treatment’s effectiveness. The entire procedure typically takes about 45 minutes

BENEFITS OF PRP INJECTIONS FOR HAIR LOSS

PRP therapy offers numerous advantages, making it a popular choice for individuals seeking to combat hair loss. Some of the key benefits include:

  • Natural and Safe: Since PRP is derived from the patient’s own blood, there is no risk of allergic reactions or rejection. This makes it a safe and natural treatment option.
  • Minimally Invasive: PRP injections are minimally invasive, requiring no surgery or extensive downtime. Patients can typically resume their regular activities shortly after the procedure.
  • Effective for Various Types of Hair Loss: PRP therapy is effective for different types of hair loss, including androgenetic alopecia, alopecia areata, and traction alopecia. It can also be used in conjunction with other hair restoration treatments.
  • Improved Hair Density and Quality: Patients often notice an improvement in hair density, thickness, and overall quality after PRP treatment. The regrowth is typically natural-looking, blending seamlessly with existing hair.
  • Long-Lasting Results: While individual results may vary, many patients experience long-lasting improvements with periodic maintenance treatments. PRP helps sustain hair growth and prevent further hair loss.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER PRP TREATMENT

Understanding what to expect after PRP treatment can help patients prepare for the recovery process and maximize their results.

  • Immediate Post-Treatment: Immediately after the procedure, patients may experience mild swelling, redness, or tenderness at the injection sites. These side effects are temporary and usually subside within a few days.
  • Initial Results: Hair growth is a gradual process, and initial results may become noticeable within a few months. Patients often observe reduced hair shedding and the appearance of new, fine hairs.
  • Full Results: Optimal results typically occur within six to twelve months after the treatment. The hair becomes thicker, denser, and more robust over time. Patients may require multiple sessions, spaced 4-5 weeks apart, to achieve the best outcomes.
  • Maintenance Treatments: To maintain the benefits of PRP therapy, periodic maintenance treatments are recommended. The frequency of these sessions varies depending on individual needs and the extent of hair loss.

COMBINING PRP WITH OTHER TREATMENTS

PRP therapy can be combined with other hair restoration treatments to enhance results. Some common combinations include:

  • Medications and Oral Supplements: PRP can be used alongside medications like minoxidil and finasteride to boost their effectiveness. These medications help slow hair loss and promote regrowth. A great alternative to medications is Nutrafol vitamins that are catered to patients based on hormonal imbalance, stress levels, menopausal changes, and even pregnancy that leads to depletion of certain minerals in the body.
  • Hair Transplant Surgery: PRP injections can complement hair transplant surgery by enhancing the healing process and promoting the growth of transplanted hair follicles.
  • Topical Treatments: Topical treatments containing growth factors and peptides can be used in conjunction with PRP to nourish the scalp and support hair growth. In addition, specialized shampoo, such as Lambdapil developed by ISDIN along with Lambdapil Scalp Lotion, can aid in scalp nourishment and overall hair health.

POTENTIAL SIDE EFFECTS AND CONSIDERATIONS

While PRP therapy is generally safe, it is essential to be aware of potential side effects and considerations.

  • Temporary Discomfort: Patients may experience mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites. These side effects are usually short-lived and resolve on their own.
  • Infection Risk: Although rare, there is a minimal risk of infection associated with any injection procedure. Proper sterilization and adherence to medical protocols minimize this risk.
  • Individual Variability: The effectiveness of PRP therapy can vary among individuals. Factors such as the severity of hair loss, underlying medical conditions, and individual response to treatment can influence outcomes.
  • Qualified Provider: Choosing a qualified and experienced medical professional, such as board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Olga Bachilo, to perform PRP therapy is crucial. A skilled practitioner ensures the procedure is done safely and effectively, maximizing the chances of successful results.

Hair loss can be a distressing experience, affecting both appearance and self-esteem. PRP injections offer a promising solution for those seeking a natural and effective way to combat hair loss. By harnessing the body’s regenerative capabilities, PRP stimulates hair follicles, promotes new growth, and enhances hair density and quality.

With its numerous benefits, minimal invasiveness, and potential for long-lasting results, PRP therapy is revolutionizing the field of hair restoration. If you are struggling with hair loss, scheduling your complimentary consultation at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa about PRP injections could be the first step towards unlocking your hair’s full potential and regaining your confidence.

As medical aesthetics professionals, we understand, few products are as crucial as sunscreen. Its role in protecting our skin from the harmful effects of the sun‘s ultraviolet (UV) rays cannot be overstated. However, with the plethora of options available, navigating the sunscreen aisle can be overwhelming. One of the primary distinctions among sunscreens lies in their active ingredients: physical and chemical filters. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the differences between physical and chemical sunscreens, their pros, and cons, and help you determine which type might be the right one for your skin.

Understanding Physical Sunscreens

Physical sunscreens, also known as mineral sunscreens, create a physical barrier on the skin’s surface to deflect UV rays. The active ingredients typically include zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These minerals work by reflecting and scattering UV radiation away from the skin, providing broad-spectrum protection against both UVA and UVB rays. One of the key advantages of physical sunscreens is their immediate efficacy upon application, making them ideal for individuals with sensitive skin or those prone to sunburns. Additionally, they are less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions, making them suitable for all skin types, including babies and individuals with dermatological conditions such as rosacea or eczema.

Pros and Cons of Physical Sunscreens

Pros:

  1. Broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays
  2. Gentle formula suitable for sensitive skin
  3. Immediate protection upon application.
  4. Less likely to cause irritation or allergic reactions.
  5. Environmentally friendly and reef-safe.

Cons:

  1. May leave a white cast or residue on the skin, especially with higher concentrations of zinc oxide
  2. Thicker consistency compared to chemical sunscreens, which can feel heavy on the skin
  3. Limited options for formulations, such as tinted or lightweight textures

Understanding Chemical Sunscreens

Chemical sunscreens function by absorbing ultraviolet (UV) radiation and transforming it into thermal energy, which is subsequently emitted from the skin. The active ingredients in chemical sunscreens include compounds like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octinoxate, and octisalate. These ingredients are designed to penetrate the skin’s surface and provide protection by absorbing UV rays before they can cause damage. Chemical sunscreens are often preferred for their lightweight textures and ease of application, as they tend to blend seamlessly into the skin without leaving a white residue.

Pros and Cons of Chemical Sunscreens

Pros:

  1. Lightweight and easy to apply, with a smooth, non-greasy texture
  2. Available in a wide range of formulations, including sprays, lotions, and gels
  3. Less likely to leave a white cast on the skin, making them suitable for all skin tones
  4. Can be formulated with additional skincare ingredients, such as antioxidants or moisturizers
  5. Offer higher water resistance compared to physical sunscreens.

Cons:

  1. Some chemical filters may cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in sensitive individuals
  2. Requires approximately 20 minutes to become effective after application
  3. Some chemical filters, such as oxybenzone, have raised concerns about potential hormone disruption and environmental impact, including coral bleaching

Choosing the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin

When selecting a sunscreen, it is essential to consider your skin type, preferences, and specific needs. Here are some factors to keep in mind:

Skin Type: Individuals with sensitive or reactive skin may benefit from using physical sunscreens, as they are less likely to cause irritation. However, those with oily or acne-prone skin may prefer lightweight, non-comedogenic formulations of chemical sunscreens.

Coverage and Texture: Physical sunscreens are known for their thicker consistency, which may feel heavy on the skin, particularly in humid climates. If you prefer a lightweight, matte finish, chemical sunscreens may be a better option. Additionally, consider whether you want a sunscreen that blends seamlessly into the skin or one that leaves a visible white cast.

Water Resistance: If you will be engaging in water activities or sweating profusely, opt for a sunscreen labeled as water-resistant, which provides longer-lasting protection. Chemical sunscreens generally offer higher water resistance compared to physical sunscreens.

Environmental Considerations: If you are concerned about the environmental impact of sunscreen ingredients, choose a mineral-based sunscreen formulated with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide. These ingredients are reef-safe and less likely to contribute to coral bleaching.

Upper blepharoplasty, often referred to as an eyelid lift, is a surgical technique aimed at correcting sagging skin, excess fat deposits, and drooping eyelids, which can not only obscure one’s natural beauty but also impair vision in severe cases. By skillfully sculpting and recontouring the upper eyelid region, this procedure offers patients the opportunity to achieve a more youthful, rested appearance while enhancing their overall facial aesthetics. In this blog, we explore the intricacies of upper blepharoplasty, from its techniques and benefits to what to expect during recovery, providing valuable insights for those considering this transformative journey towards revitalized eyes and enhanced confidence. In addition, provide you with an account of Dr. Bachilo’s actual patient who has undergone this procedure exactly 3 months ago.

Understanding Upper Blepharoplasty: Upper blepharoplasty is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to address sagging or drooping eyelids, excess skin, and fatty deposits that can accumulate in the upper eyelids over time. These natural signs of aging can not only make you appear older but also contribute to a tired or sad expression, even when you are well-rested and vibrant.

The Procedure: The procedure typically begins with a detailed consultation with our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Olga Bachilo. During this consultation, Dr. Bachilo will assess your medical history, discuss your aesthetic goals, and evaluate the condition of your eyelids to determine if you are a suitable candidate for upper blepharoplasty.

On the day of the procedure, Dr. Bachilo will once again go over the plan, and will start on the marking of the skin using surgical measuring instruments to ensure proportions between both eyes and aesthetic look. Afterwards, you will be administered local anesthesia to guarantee your comfort throughout the surgery. Dr. Bachilo will then make precise incisions along the natural creases of your upper eyelids. These incisions are strategically placed to minimize visible scarring once the healing process is complete.

Once the incisions are made, excess skin, muscle, and fat are carefully removed or repositioned to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. The underlying structures are then meticulously recontoured to create a smoother, more youthful eyelid contour.

Recovery and Results: Following upper blepharoplasty, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the treated area. However, these side effects are temporary and can be managed with proper post-operative care, including rest, cold compresses, and prescribed medications.

Most patients are able to resume normal activities within a week or two, although strenuous exercise and activities should be avoided for a few weeks to allow for optimal healing. As the swelling subsides and the incisions heal, you will start to notice the remarkable transformation in your eyelid appearance.

The results of upper blepharoplasty are long-lasting, providing a more youthful and refreshed appearance to the eyes. Not only will you look more awake and vibrant, but you will also experience a boost in self-confidence and overall satisfaction with your appearance.

Q&A with Dr. Bachilo’s blepharoplasty patient

Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa: Thank you for agreeing to provide our patients with your experience during the surgery. Please tell us about yourself, and why have you decided to undergo this procedure?

Patient: I am a 67-year-old mother of two, who has always wanted to do this procedure due to my hooded eye lids that have gotten worse over the years. It was difficult to apply make-up, read laying down, sometimes even wearing reading glasses. And of course, who enjoys to look at a tired-looking face with puffy eyes in the mornings.

GPSMS: What has made you choose Dr. Bachilo as your surgeon?

P: Her bedside manner. I was never rushed or ridiculed. She listened to me, asking questions specifically related to me, and not once I felt like a number. In fact, what made me solidify my decision was her remark: “You raise your eyebrows to help with your eyesight, don’t you, and it causes deep creeses in your forehead.” That alone showed me her expertise by making this spot-on observation.

GPSMS: How was the process of booking and paying for your procedure?

P: Easy. Dr. Bachilo’s surgical coordinator was so thorough and knowledgeable when addressing my concerns, and went line by line answering my questions. Went over my medications, gave detailed instructions for aftercare, and a timeline of the recovery process. You can say with 100% certainty she truly loves what she does, and cares for her patients. Because procedure was in-office, I saved a lot on operating room and anesthesia costs, and only took care of the surgical fees. Also received 5% discount, because I paid in cash.

GPSM: Please describe how you felt going into the procedure and after it concluded

P: Nervous, and anxious about the pain. Was worried if I would feel anything. Was scared that my eyeballs may get injured. It is very nerve-racking thinking that sharp instruments will be so close to my eyes. I arrived at 9:30am, and my ride picked me up at 12pm, the whole process, including numbing and paperwork took a little more than 2 hours. In fact, we went to a nursery to by some plants on the way home, so that should tell you that I felt no pain, and could see everything perfectly.

GPSM: Please summarize how you felt during the procedure?

P: The most uncomfortable part was the numbing, since I felt tiny pricks of anesthesia being injected in my eyelid. Other than that, it was very comfortable. Dr. Bachilo and her assistant kept on checking on me, and it felt like a social visit, she was telling funny stories from her past as a medical student, and experience traveling Europe as a child, so it kept me entertained and eased my mind. The only physical sensation that I experienced was pulling and slight pressure, and absolutely no pain.

GPSM: Why have you opted-in for an in-office procedure, rather than the surgery center with general anesthesia?

P: (laughing) Dr. Bachilo made me feel so safe and comfortable, I did not even have a second thought. It is a relatively short surgery, only 1.5 hours or so, and usually there are some risks associated with general anesthesia, and at my age, I did not want to take any chances. Plus, the cost. I saved a few thousand dollars by omitting OR and anesthesia fees.

GPSM: Please describe your recovery process

P: First 3 days were probably the least pleasant ones. I was not in pain, but was very aware that something had been done to my eyes, as I felt pressure from being swollen. I slept in a recliner, so my head was elevated, and had to wear sunglasses for the first 24 hours, as my eyes were a bit sensitive to light. I only took Tylenol PM first night, and did not take any pain medicine after that. I did wash my face the next day, and it significantly improved my well-being and alleviated tightness in my upper face.

The bruising and inflammation started to subside after 3rd day, and I could see the improvement in my vision. About 6 days later I saw Dr. Bachilo for the removal of the stitches. It was a relatively painless process; I just felt some pressure as she carefully cut the threads and pulled them out.

GPSM: How do you feel 3 months post your surgery?

P: I get emotional looking at my face, because I cannot believe how life-changing this procedure was. I do not have to strain my eyes or constantly raise my eyebrows to improve my vision. I look so much younger and rested. The shape of my eyes stayed the same, so they look as they did 40 years ago, which is so special. I cannot thank Dr. Bachilo and her team enough for improving the quality of my life, thank you from the bottom of my heart!

Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa: Thank you for sharing your experience with our patients. We hope you continue to enjoy your results and we wish all the best!

In conclusion, upper blepharoplasty offers a safe and effective solution for addressing the signs of aging around the upper eyelids, helping you achieve a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance. If sagging eyelids or excess skin are affecting your confidence and self-esteem, consider consulting with a board-certified plastic surgeon, such as Dr. Olga Bachilo, to explore whether upper blepharoplasty is right for you. With advancements in cosmetic surgery techniques, achieving brighter, more youthful eyes is now more accessible than ever before.

In the world of plastic surgery, a noticeable trend has emerged in recent years – the growing preference for female plastic surgeons over their male counterparts. This shift in dynamics within the healthcare industry raises intriguing questions about gender representation, patient preferences, and the evolving landscape of cosmetic procedures. While the field of plastic surgery has traditionally been dominated by male practitioners, the rise of female plastic surgeons signals a significant transformation, driven by various factors that transcend mere gender stereotypes. In this blog, we delve into the reasons behind the increasing demand for female plastic surgeons and explore the implications of this trend.

Breaking Stereotypes: Empowerment and Representation

One of the fundamental reasons behind the surge in demand for female plastic surgeons lies in the realm of empowerment and representation. Historically, women have been underrepresented in surgical specialties, including plastic surgery. However, as societal norms evolve and gender barriers gradually dissolve, more women are entering the field of medicine and pursuing careers in surgery. The presence of female plastic surgeons not only challenges traditional gender norms but also provides a sense of empowerment to patients, particularly women, who seek cosmetic procedures. The ability to connect with a female surgeon who understands their unique concerns and experiences can foster a greater sense of comfort and confidence among patients, thereby contributing to the rising demand for female plastic surgeons.

Emphasis on Communication and Compassion

Another factor driving the preference for female plastic surgeons is the emphasis on communication and compassion. Plastic surgery consultations often involve discussions about personal insecurities, body image concerns, and aesthetic goals. In this regard, female surgeons are often perceived as being more empathetic, attentive, and nurturing, qualities that are highly valued by patients seeking cosmetic enhancements. The ability of female plastic surgeons to establish rapport, actively listen to patient concerns, and provide compassionate care fosters a supportive environment that promotes trust and enhances the overall patient experience. As a result, many individuals gravitate towards female surgeons for their approachability and empathetic demeanor, further fueling the demand for their services.

Cultural Shifts and Changing Beauty Standards

The evolving landscape of beauty standards and cultural shifts also plays a significant role in driving the demand for female plastic surgeons. In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of diverse beauty ideals that celebrate authenticity, inclusivity, and individuality. This shift towards embracing natural beauty and diversity has prompted many patients to seek cosmetic procedures that enhance their unique features rather than conforming to unrealistic standards of perfection. Female plastic surgeons, with their nuanced understanding of aesthetic nuances and commitment to enhancing natural beauty, are well-positioned to cater to this evolving demand. Their ability to prioritize patient preferences, offer personalized treatment plans, and deliver subtle yet impactful results aligns with the shifting paradigm of beauty in contemporary society.

Advancements in Surgical Techniques and Technology

The increasing demand for female plastic surgeons is also influenced by advancements in surgical techniques and technology. As the field of plastic surgery continues to evolve, there is a growing emphasis on minimally invasive procedures, innovative technologies, and sophisticated surgical techniques. Female plastic surgeons, often at the forefront of adopting new technologies and refining surgical approaches, are perceived as being progressive and forward-thinking. Their commitment to staying abreast of the latest developments in the field enables them to offer cutting-edge treatments that prioritize safety, efficacy, and patient satisfaction. As patients seek out surgeons who embrace innovation and prioritize optimal outcomes, female plastic surgeons are increasingly regarded as preferred providers of advanced cosmetic procedures.

Embracing Diversity and Empowerment

In conclusion, the rising demand for female plastic surgeons reflects a broader societal shift towards diversity, empowerment, and patient-centered care. As women continue to shatter glass ceilings and carve out their place in traditionally male-dominated fields, their presence in plastic surgery signifies a step towards greater inclusivity and representation in healthcare. The unique attributes of female plastic surgeons, including their empathetic approach, communication skills, and commitment to patient satisfaction, resonate with patients seeking personalized and compassionate care. By embracing diversity and empowering patients to make informed choices about their cosmetic goals, female plastic surgeons are redefining the landscape of plastic surgery and paving the way for a more inclusive and patient-centric approach to aesthetic enhancement. Cellulite – a word that often evokes frustration, confusion, and a myriad of misconceptions. It is a condition that affects people of all shapes, sizes, and genders, yet its true nature remains shrouded in myths and confusions. From miracle creams to extreme diets, the pursuit to banish cellulite has led many down a path of misinformation. But fear not, for in this comprehensive guide, we will debunk the top myths surrounding cellulite, separating fact from fiction, and empowering you with the knowledge needed to navigate this often-misunderstood aspect of the human body.

Myth #1: Only Overweight People Have Cellulite

One of the most prevalent myths about cellulite is the notion that it only affects those who are heavy or out of shape. This misconception stems from the visible appearance of cellulite, which often manifests as dimpled or lumpy skin, particularly around the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen. However, cellulite is not exclusive to individuals with excess body fat.

Cellulite can affect individuals of any body type, including those who are slim or physically fit. This is because cellulite is not solely a result of fat accumulation but rather a combination of factors including genetics, hormones, and connective tissue structure. Even individuals with low body fat percentages can develop cellulite due to the way fat is distributed beneath the skin and the strength of their connective tissue.

Myth #2: Cellulite Is Caused by Toxins

Another prevalent myth surrounding cellulite is the idea that it is caused by the buildup of toxins in the body. This misconception has led to the proliferation of detoxifying treatments and products marketed as cellulite cures, ranging from special teas to body wraps.

However, there is little scientific evidence to support the notion that toxins play a significant role in the development of cellulite. While it is true that the body can accumulate toxins from various sources such as environmental pollutants and certain foods, there is no direct link between toxin buildup and the formation of cellulite.

Instead, cellulite is primarily influenced by factors such as genetics, hormones, lifestyle, and age. It occurs when fat deposits protrude into the dermis layer of the skin, creating the characteristic dimpled appearance. Therefore, focusing on detoxification alone is unlikely to effectively address cellulite.

Myth #3: Cellulite Can Be Eliminated Through Creams and Lotions

Walk down the skincare aisle of any pharmacy or beauty store, and you will likely encounter an array of products promising to banish cellulite with their revolutionary formulas. From caffeine-infused creams to collagen-boosting serums, the market is flooded with topical treatments claiming to smooth away cellulite and restore skin firmness.

While some of these products may provide temporary improvements in skin texture and hydration, the reality is that no cream or lotion can eliminate cellulite. This is because cellulite is a structural issue that originates beneath the skin’s surface, where topical treatments have limited penetration.

Moreover, the effectiveness of cellulite creams is often exaggerated by clever marketing tactics and before-and-after photos that may be digitally altered. While these products may offer modest improvements in the appearance of cellulite, they are unlikely to produce long-lasting or significant results on their own.

Myth #4: Losing Weight Will Get Rid of Cellulite

Many people believe that shedding excess pounds through diet and exercise is the key to eliminating cellulite. While weight loss can sometimes lead to a reduction in the appearance of cellulite, especially in cases where excess body fat contributes to its prominence, it is not a guaranteed solution.

In fact, extreme or rapid weight loss may exacerbate the appearance of cellulite by causing the skin to become lax and loose. Additionally, even individuals with low body fat percentages can still experience cellulite due to genetic predispositions and other factors beyond weight alone.

Furthermore, focusing solely on weight loss as a means of addressing cellulite overlooks the importance of overall body composition, including muscle tone and skin elasticity. Building lean muscle mass through strength training and adopting a balanced exercise regimen may help improve the appearance of cellulite by supporting skin firmness and overall body contour.

Myth #5: Cellulite Only Affects Women

While it is true that cellulite is more commonly seen in women than men, it is not exclusive to any gender. Men can also develop cellulite, although it tends to be less prevalent due to differences in fat distribution and connective tissue structure.

The appearance of cellulite in women is often attributed to hormonal factors, specifically estrogen, which influences fat storage, circulation, and collagen production in the skin. This is why cellulite is frequently associated with hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause.

However, men can still experience cellulite, particularly in areas where fat deposits are more prominent, such as the abdomen and hips. Factors such as genetics, lifestyle, and age also play a role in the development of cellulite in men, highlighting the importance of understanding that it is not a condition exclusive to women.

Myth #6: Cellulite Is Permanent

Perhaps one of the most disheartening myths surrounding cellulite is the belief that once it appears, it is there to stay. While cellulite can be stubborn and challenging to eliminate entirely, it is not necessarily a permanent condition.

Through a combination of lifestyle modifications, professional treatments, such as Aveli skin subcision, and realistic expectations, individuals can often reduce the appearance of cellulite and improve the overall texture and tone of their skin. Adopting a healthy diet, staying hydrated, exercising regularly, and maintaining a stable weight can all contribute to minimizing the visibility of cellulite.

Additionally, various medical aesthetic treatments, such as injections with Radiesse, radiofrequency with acoustic wave therapy, such as Emtone, or Venus Legacy have shown promising results in reducing cellulite and tightening the skin. These treatments work by targeting the underlying causes of cellulite, including fat deposits and collagen production, to improve skin texture and firmness.

In conclusion, cellulite is a complex and multifaceted condition that defies simple solutions and quick fixes. By dispelling these common myths and gaining a better understanding of the factors that contribute to cellulite, individuals can approach its management with greater clarity and confidence. Rather than chasing unrealistic expectations or succumbing to misleading marketing tactics, embracing a holistic approach to health and wellness is key to achieving smoother, more radiant skin – cellulite and all. Embarking on a weight loss journey is a commendable and empowering decision. Whether motivated by health concerns, a desire for increased energy, or a boost in confidence, making a resolution to lose weight is the first step towards a healthier, more fulfilling life. However, the path to sustainable weight loss involves more than just setting a goal. In this blog, we will explore the essential steps to take after making your weight loss resolution, guiding you through the process of transforming your aspirations into tangible, lasting results.

Set Realistic Goals

Before diving into specific diets or exercise routines, it is crucial to set realistic and achievable goals. Rather than focusing solely on the number on the scale, consider broader health objectives. Establish milestones related to improved fitness, better sleep, increased energy levels, or enhanced mental well-being. Realistic goals create a positive mindset and set the foundation for long-term success.

Educate Yourself

Understanding the fundamentals of nutrition, exercise, and overall well-being is key to making informed decisions on your weight loss journey. Research different dietary approaches, learn about portion control, and explore various forms of physical activity. Knowledge empowers you to make choices that align with your goals and ensures that your weight loss efforts are sustainable and health-oriented. Our functional weight loss medicine expert and nurse practitioner Elena has a wealth of information that will help and guide you through this life-changing journey.

Create a Balanced Diet Plan

Rather than succumbing to fad diets or extreme restrictions, focus on creating a balanced and nourishing diet plan. Include a variety of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your meals. Strive for moderation rather than deprivation, making sustainable choices that you can maintain over the long term. Consulting with our functional weight loss specialist can provide personalized guidance based on your individual needs and preferences.

Incorporate Regular Exercise

Physical activity is a cornerstone of any successful weight loss journey. Find activities you enjoy to make exercise a consistent part of your routine. Whether it is jogging, cycling, yoga, or weight training, choose activities that align with your interests and fitness level. Start gradually, setting realistic exercise goals that evolve as your fitness improves. Remember, consistency is more important than intensity. You can also try body contouring treatments, to offset your exercise routine and boost your energy levels.

Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is often overlooked but is crucial for overall health and weight management. Drinking an adequate amount of water supports metabolism, helps control appetite, and contributes to overall well-being. Make it a habit to carry a reusable water bottle and aim to consume the recommended daily intake of water based on your individual needs and activity level. And for an extra added boost of energy, try our IV Therapy.

Get Adequate Sleep

Quality sleep plays a significant role in weight management and overall health. Lack of sleep can disrupt hormonal balance, leading to increased cravings for unhealthy foods and decreased energy levels. Establish a consistent sleep routine, prioritize relaxation before bedtime, and create a sleep-friendly environment to ensure you get the rest your body needs to support your weight loss efforts.

Track Your Progress

Monitoring your progress is essential for staying motivated and making necessary adjustments to your plan. Consider keeping a journal to track your meals, exercise routines, and any changes in your weight or measurements. Celebrate small victories along the way, and do not be discouraged by occasional setbacks. Tracking your journey provides valuable insights into what works for you and helps you stay committed to your goals.

Build a Support System

Embarking on a weight loss journey can be challenging, but having a support system can make a significant difference. Share your goals with friends, family, or join a community of like-minded individuals. Having a support system provides encouragement, accountability, and a sense of camaraderie, making the journey more enjoyable and sustainable.

Address Emotional Eating

Emotional eating is a common challenge on the path to weight loss. Learn to recognize triggers and find alternative ways to cope with stress, boredom, or other emotions that may lead to unhealthy eating habits. Practices such as mindfulness, meditation, or seeking professional counseling can help you develop a healthier relationship with food.

Celebrate Non-Scale Victories

While tracking weight is a common measure of progress, it is essential to celebrate non-scale victories as well. Notice improvements in energy levels, increased stamina during workouts, enhanced mood, and other positive changes in your overall well-being. Recognizing these achievements reinforces the holistic nature of your weight loss journey.

Making a weight loss resolution is just the beginning of a transformative journey towards a healthier, more fulfilling life. By setting realistic goals, educating yourself, and adopting sustainable lifestyle changes, you can navigate this path with confidence and resilience. Remember that the journey is unique to you, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to weight loss. Embrace the process, celebrate your achievements, and prioritize both physical and mental well-being. With dedication, perseverance, and a well-informed strategy, you can turn your weight loss resolution into a lifelong commitment to a healthier you. Ready for consultation? In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare and wellness, Intravenous (IV) Therapy has emerged as a transformative approach to achieving optimal health and vitality. Often hailed as the “Fountain of Health,” IV Therapy goes beyond conventional treatments, delivering essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream. This blog explores the science behind IV Therapy, its benefits, and how it has become a popular choice for individuals seeking a holistic and proactive approach to well-being.

Understanding IV Therapy

IV Therapy involves the administration of a tailored cocktail of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and other essential nutrients directly into the bloodstream through an intravenous drip. This method bypasses the digestive system, ensuring maximum absorption and bioavailability of the nutrients. The infusion is usually administered in a controlled medical setting, allowing for precise dosage and monitoring.

The Nutrient Powerhouse

One of the key advantages of IV Therapy lies in its ability to provide a concentrated dose of nutrients that may be difficult to achieve through oral supplements or diet alone. The infusion typically includes vitamins such as C and B-complex, minerals like magnesium and zinc, amino acids, and antioxidants. These nutrients play crucial roles in supporting various bodily functions, including immune health, energy production, and cellular repair.

Boosting Immune Function

A robust immune system is the cornerstone of good health. IV Therapy has gained popularity for its immune-boosting properties, especially in times when the body needs an extra line of defense. High-dose vitamin C, a common component of IV infusions, has been shown to enhance immune function, making it a valuable tool for preventing and recovering from illnesses.

Enhanced Hydration

Proper hydration is fundamental to overall health, and IV Therapy offers a quick and effective way to address dehydration. The infusion includes a saline solution that replenishes fluids and electrolytes, helping to restore balance in the body. This is particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions like dehydration from illness, intense physical activity, or excessive alcohol consumption.

Energy Revitalization

For those feeling fatigued or run down, IV Therapy can provide a revitalizing energy boost. The infusion of B vitamins, including B12, is known to support energy metabolism and combat fatigue. Many individuals, including athletes and busy professionals, turn to IV Therapy as a proactive measure to maintain peak performance and vitality.

Detoxification Support

Our bodies are constantly exposed to environmental toxins and pollutants. IV Therapy can aid in detoxification by supplying the body with nutrients that support liver function and the elimination of harmful substances. Glutathione, a powerful antioxidant often included in IV infusions, plays a pivotal role in detoxification, and helps protect cells from oxidative stress.

Recovery and Performance Enhancement

Athletes and fitness enthusiasts have embraced IV Therapy as a tool for recovery and performance enhancement. The infusion of nutrients directly into the bloodstream allows for faster replenishment of depleted resources after intense physical activity. This accelerated recovery can contribute to improved athletic performance and reduced downtime between training sessions.

Stress Reduction and Mental Clarity

Modern life is often characterized by stress and mental fatigue. IV Therapy offers a holistic approach to mental well-being by supplying the brain with essential nutrients. B vitamins, magnesium, and amino acids in IV infusions have been associated with improved cognitive function, stress reduction, and enhanced mood.

Customization for Individual Needs

One of the strengths of IV Therapy lies in its customization. Healthcare providers can tailor IV infusions to address specific health concerns or goals. Whether it is immune support, energy enhancement, or recovery from a specific condition, the flexibility of IV Therapy allows for a personalized approach to wellness.

The Role of Professional Guidance

While IV Therapy has shown promise in promoting overall health, it is crucial to approach it with careful consideration and under the guidance of qualified healthcare professionals, such as Dr. Olga Bachilo, who is a board-certified plastic surgeon. A thorough assessment of an individual’s health status, medical history, and specific needs should precede any IV infusion. This ensures that the therapy is not only safe but also optimized for maximum effectiveness.

In conclusion, IV Therapy represents a revolutionary approach to holistic health, offering a myriad of benefits that extend beyond conventional treatments. The direct infusion of essential nutrients into the bloodstream provides a powerful and efficient way to support immune function, boost energy, and enhance overall well-being. As the interest in preventive and proactive healthcare grows, IV Therapy stands out as a versatile tool in the pursuit of the Fountain of Health, helping individuals achieve and maintain optimal vitality in the modern world. However, it is essential to approach IV Therapy with informed decisions and the guidance of healthcare professionals to unlock its full potential safely. If you are interested in learning more about this therapy or try it for yourself, call or text 713-766-4643, and we at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa will be delighted to assist you!
