miraDry Technology and How It Works
miraDry works by harnessing electromagnetic energy to eliminate or damage sweat glands in order to treat excessive sweating, as well as targeting specifically foul-smelling sweat. While this technology has only recently been approved for this use, its beneficial use in a slew of other medical procedures, ranging from cardiology to general surgery to oncology and dozens of other applications, has been established as safe for many years.
miraDry is performed using a non-invasive handheld device that safely delivers precisely controlled electromagnetic energy to a targeted area underneath the surface of the skin in the axillary or underarm region, causing thermolysis, a process by which tissue breaks down as a consequence of heat, to damage or destroy the actual sweat glands. During the treatment, while the sweat glands below the skin’s surface are being broken down through heat, the top outer layers of skin are simultaneously being cooled and protected. Because sweat glands do not usually grow back once they are destroyed, the effect of this treatment is practically immediate, with results that may be considered permanent. While some patients may efficiently alleviate the condition of axillary hyperhidrosis in only one treatment, optimal results are achieved when a total of two procedures are performed, ideally spaced three months apart. In some cases, a third treatment may be required.
The miraDry procedure is simple and safe, and usually takes about one hour or less. Dr. Bachilo uses local anesthesia such as lidocaine injections, to numb the area before applying the treatment. Most patients report little to no discomfort during the procedure and no need for downtime after treatment.
Some miraDry patients may experience swelling, redness, and tenderness in the underarms that may last for a few days, as well as a sensation of numbness and tingling in the upper arm or armpit that may last for several weeks. To alleviate any discomfort or soreness, ice packs and over-the-counter pain medication should suffice. While most patients are able to resume regular activities immediately following the procedure, Dr. Bachilo may recommend holding off on strenuous exercise for several days.
miraDry Clinical Trials and Results
A study published in 2013 in the Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy demonstrated the efficacy of miraDry at treating both axillary hyperhidrosis and axillary osmidrosis, the medical name for foul-smelling sweat. Eleven patients were observed during this study, treated with miraDry, and evaluated 7 months after the initial procedure to determine if symptoms had improved. Using a Hyperhidrosis Disease Severity Scale (HDSS) to measure the results, 83% of patients treated for axillary hyperhidrosis demonstrated an improvement in the condition, and of those that were treated specifically to eliminate foul odor or osmidrosis, almost 94% demonstrated results that were classified as good or excellent.
