How Is Rhinoplasty Procedure Performed?
Rhinoplasty is done at an outpatient surgery center or hospital under general anesthesia and takes 2 to 3 hours. Procedure may be performed utilizing one of two techniques: an open or a closed approach depending on patients’ needs.
During open rhinoplasty Dr. Bachilo makes an incision on the outside of your nose between the nostrils. This incision is the only incision that may be slightly perceptible on the outside of the nose. The remaining incisions are completely hidden inside your nostrils. Dr. Bachilo will then expose the cartilaginous and bony structural framework of your nose. Modifications to the cartilaginous framework of the nose are done by removing some cartilage, reshaping cartilage, or adding cartilage via grafts. For grafting cartilage may be removed from the septum or from the ear. To narrow or straighten the nose alignment nasal bones may be broken and repositioned. After the cartilaginous and bony structure are reshaped the skin incisions are closed. Sutures on the outside of the nose need to be removed in 5 to 7 days, but the sutures inside the nose are absorbable and do not need removal. Dr. Bachilo may use a splint on the outside of your nose for protection and a splints and/or packing inside your nose. These remain in place until removal by Dr. Bachilo during your follow up visit.
During closed rhinoplasty technique all incisions are made inside the nose. All corrections and changes to bone and cartilage are done through these smaller incisions and therefore this option is reserved for patients who need minimal adjustments.

Septoplasty
Septoplasty is a specialized nose surgery to specifically correct a deviated septum, which refers to a condition affecting the bone and cartilage between the two nostrils that often causes breathing difficulties. The septoplasty procedure straightens the nasal septum and repositions it in the center of the nose. In many instances, this procedure may be covered by health insurance.
