OVERVIEW
Upper and Lower Eyelid Surgery Options

Eyelid surgery can refresh tired, heavy, or aging eyes by improving excess skin, puffiness, and under-eye bags while preserving your natural expression.

Eyelid lift results with Dr. Olga Bachilo in Houston, 2 weeks post-op

Eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty or an eyelid lift, is a facial rejuvenation procedure designed to improve the appearance of tired, heavy, or aging eyes. Over time, excess upper eyelid skin, puffiness, under-eye bags, and fine wrinkles can make the face look older or more fatigued than you feel. Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, depending on your anatomy and goals.

At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Houston, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Olga Bachilo customizes eyelid surgery to create a brighter, more rested appearance while preserving your natural eye shape and expression. Upper blepharoplasty can help reduce sagging skin and improve eyelid definition, while lower blepharoplasty can address under-eye bags, puffiness, and excess lower eyelid skin. The goal is not to change how you look, but to help you look refreshed, balanced, and natural.

Benefits of Upper Blepharoplasty

  • Reduce excess sagging skin on the upper eyelids.
  • Define the upper eyelid crease.
  • Remove or reposition excess fat that creates eyelid fullness.
  • Create a more open, rested, and refreshed appearance.

Benefits of Lower Blepharoplasty

  • Remove excess crepey skin from the lower eyelids
  • Decrease puffiness under the eyes through excess fat removal.
  • Decrease the appearance of under-eye bags and certain types of dark circles.
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines on the lower eyelids.
  • Help the eyes appear more rested, refreshed, and youthful.

CONSULTATION

What to Expect During Your Eyelid Surgery Consultation

Your consultation includes a detailed evaluation of your eyelids, facial anatomy, medical history, and goals to determine the best treatment plan.

During your consultation, Dr. Bachilo will ask about your health history, with special attention to any eye conditions, and examine your eyes. She will ask about any medications you are taking and document any allergies.

It is important that you communicate your goals and expectations during your consultation. This allows Dr. Bachilo to create a treatment plan that fits your specific needs. She will make treatment recommendations specific to you, describe the expected outcomes, explain any potential risks and instruct you on how to prepare for your procedure. Ask as many questions as you need to become fully comfortable with the procedure.

PROCEDURE

How Eyelid Surgery Is Performed

Blepharoplasty is performed using carefully placed incisions to remove or reposition excess skin and fat while keeping scars discreet.

The procedure may be performed in an outpatient surgery center or hospital and takes one to two hours. If only an upper eyelid lift is being performed, it can be done in the office setting using light sedation and local anesthetic. Patients who choose in-office upper eyelid surgery report feeling comfortable throughout the procedure.

The blepharoplasty procedure begins with the administration of anesthesia. This may include light sedation or general anesthesia combined with local anesthetic. Incisions are placed on the upper or lower eyelids, depending on whether upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both are being performed. When upper and lower blepharoplasty are being performed in the same setting, the upper lids are usually done first. The upper eyelid incision is placed within the natural eyelid crease. Once healed, the incision is typically well hidden. The lower lid incision is placed just below the lash line.

The fat in the lid is then addressed, and the excess skin is excised. Excess fat may be repositioned, partially removed, or removed completely, depending on the patient’s anatomy. Dr. Bachilo will determine the right technique given your unique situation. Eyelid incisions will then be closed using absorbable sutures that do not need to be removed.

RECOVERY

What to Expect During Blepharoplasty Recovery

Learn what to expect after eyelid surgery, including swelling, bruising, activity restrictions, and the gradual healing process.

Dr. Bachilo will provide detailed instructions on how to care for your eyes and may prescribe antibiotics, eye drops, and pain medication as needed. You should not drive while taking your pain medication. You may use cool packs on your eyes and sleep with your head elevated on 3 to 4 pillows to help reduce swelling. Dark sunglasses should be used to reduce exposure to harsh sunlight and to protect your eyes.

Immediately following the procedure, it is normal to experience some light sensitivity, blurry vision, swelling, and bruising, all of which are temporary. You will go home after your procedure and follow-up appointments will be scheduled.  Dr. Bachilo will monitor your healing progress during those visits.

What Should Be Avoided During the Recovery Period After Eyelid Surgery?

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes or touching the incisions to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Using contact lenses.
  • Strenuous activities and heavy lifting.
  • Aspirin and other over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, such as ibuprofen.
  • Smoking.

If you experience any symptoms such as significant bleeding, excessive eye pain, and severe vision problems, notify Dr. Bachilo and seek medical attention without delay.

The average recovery period is 10 to 14 days after blepharoplasty. Most patients return to work in just a few days. Makeup on the eyes may be used after 2 weeks.

RESULTS

Eyelid Surgery Results and Recovery Timeline

Results improve as swelling fades, revealing brighter, more rested-looking eyes with natural-looking definition.

Improvements in the appearance of the eyes may be visible soon after the procedure, but the final results are typically seen about one month after surgery. By this time, most swelling and bruising should be resolved.

Many patients enjoy long-lasting, refreshed results after blepharoplasty. It is important to avoid excessive sun exposure in order to help keep your eyes and face looking fresh. Make sunscreen use a routine in your daily life even after recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift Surgery)

Does eyelid surgery leave scars?

No. The scars left after an eyelid surgery are very thin hairline scars and these are typically camouflaged in the natural folds and creases that surround the eyes, making them virtually invisible.

How is eyelid surgery performed?

Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery is performed by means of tiny incisions that the surgeon will use to tighten loose, sagging skin as well as lax muscle tissue around the eye area, to achieve a smooth and youthful appearance.

Who is a good candidate for Blepharoplasty?

The best candidate for eye surgery is anyone looking to refresh the appearance of his or her eyes and has reasonable expectations. Patients undergoing blepharoplasty should have no serious eye conditions, be in a fairly good general health, and should not be actively using tobacco products.

Can I combine an Upper and Lower Blepharoplasty in one session?

Yes. You can combine an upper and lower blepharoplasty, as well as other plastic surgery procedures, into one session.

Will Blepharoplasty affect my ability to see properly?

Eyelid surgery will not negatively affect your ability to see. In fact, some patients may actually see better after blepharoplasty, because the procedure may effectively remove excess sagging skin that may be obstructing vision.

Can Blepharoplasty be combined with other procedures?

Blepharoplasty is often combined with other facial cosmetic procedures, most commonly other procedures on the face, such as brow lift, facelift/necklift, and fat transfer to the face. Make sure to discuss with Dr. Bachilo if additional procedures can help you reach your aesthetic goals.

What is the cost of Eyelid Surgery in Houston?

Every patient is different, and each surgery is tailored to the patient’s individual needs. If you require both an upper and lower blepharoplasty, it will naturally be more expensive than if you have only one of the two. The price of an upper eye lid surgery or a lower lid surgery may range between $3,000 and $5,000. While a combination surgery may range between $4,000 and $7,000. You may also combine eyelid procedure with other facial procedures to save money as well as recovery time.

Will Blepharoplasty eliminate lines and wrinkles around the eyes?

While eyelid surgery removes sagging skin around the eyes, it does not eliminate lines and wrinkles such as crow’s feet and laugh lines that typically develop at the corners of the eyes. You may choose to combine eyelid surgery with another facial procedure such as a brow lift or dermal injections to smooth out those lines and wrinkles.

What type of anesthesia is used during Eyelid Surgery?

Lower blepharoplasty is normally performed using general anesthesia, while the upper blepharoplasty can be performed using local anesthesia.

Will Blepharoplasty eliminate dark circles under the eyes?

It depends on what is causing those dark circles. Blepharoplasty will eliminate dark circles caused by excess folds of skin or fat under the eyes; however, if the dark circles are caused by another problem, such as hyperpigmentation, blepharoplasty will not correct the problem, and you may have to resort to a different type of treatment for this, such as laser skin resurfacing.

Does Blepharoplasty require an extensive recovery period?

As with any surgery, you should prepare for your procedure by making sure you have someone to drive you home following the surgery and provide general care around the house for a few days. Following a blepharoplasty, it is normal to experience blurred vision, tightness, swelling, or a numbing sensation in the area around the eyes, but these symptoms naturally resolve themselves within a week. Patients typically require a week of rest and may resume non-strenuous physical activities after two weeks. Dr. Bachilo will also advise you to wear sunglasses and protect the delicate skin around your eyes from exposure to sunlight by using a good sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher any time you leave your house.

Will my health insurance cover the cost of Eyelid Surgery?

Health insurance carriers may cover the cost of blepharoplasty when it is performed for functional rather than purely cosmetic reasons, in other words, if the surgery is performed for the purpose of improving the patient’s vision in cases where sagging folds of skin obstruct the field of vision. Most health insurance will not cover any surgery performed for purely cosmetic reasons.

Skin Renewal

Chemical Peels for Eye Rejuvenation

Refresh the delicate eye area by improving fine lines, uneven texture, dullness, and discoloration for smoother, brighter-looking skin.

Chemical peels are a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatment that can help improve the appearance of fine lines, crepey texture, uneven tone, and mild discoloration around the eyes. For patients who are not ready for eyelid surgery or who want to enhance their blepharoplasty results, a customized chemical peel may help brighten and smooth the surrounding skin for a more refreshed appearance.

At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Houston, chemical peels can be selected based on your skin type, concerns, and treatment goals. When used carefully around the delicate eye area, chemical peels encourage gentle exfoliation and skin renewal, helping reduce dullness, rough texture, sun damage, and early signs of aging. This treatment may also be combined with other nonsurgical eye rejuvenation options, such as dermal fillers or radiofrequency skin tightening, to improve overall skin quality and create a more rested, youthful look.

Volume Restoration

Dermal Fillers for Eye Rejuvenation

Restore lost volume, soften hollows, and improve the appearance of tired-looking eyes without surgery.

Dermal fillers are a nonsurgical eye rejuvenation option designed to improve volume loss, under-eye hollows, and shadowing that can make the eyes appear tired or aged. As facial volume decreases over time, the area beneath the eyes may look sunken, dark, or less smooth. Carefully placed filler can help restore soft support under the eyes and create a smoother transition between the lower eyelid and cheek. Volbella and Belotero are two injectable dermal fillers that are particularly suited to treating the area around the eyes, imparting volume into hollowed-out areas, and smoothing the skin, for a refreshed, clean appearance.

At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Houston, dermal filler treatments for the eye area are customized to each patient’s facial anatomy, skin quality, and aesthetic goals. This treatment may be appropriate for patients who are not ready for blepharoplasty with Dr. Bachilo or who want to enhance their overall facial rejuvenation with subtle, natural-looking results. When performed with precision, under-eye filler can help refresh the face, soften shadows, and create a more rested appearance without surgery or significant downtime.

Skin Firming

RF Skin Tightening for Eye Rejuvenation

Improve mild skin laxity, crepey texture, and firmness around the eyes for a smoother, more refreshed appearance.

RF skin tightening is a nonsurgical eye rejuvenation treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to gently heat the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate collagen production. Around the eyes, loss of collagen can contribute to fine lines, crepey texture, and mild skin laxity, making the area look tired or aged. Treatments such as Venus Legacy™ and Exilis use radiofrequency energy to encourage natural collagen remodeling, helping firm and smooth the delicate eye area over time.

At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Houston, RF skin tightening treatments are customized based on each patient’s skin quality, anatomy, and aesthetic goals. This treatment may be a good option for patients with mild to moderate looseness around the eyes who are not ready for eyelid surgery or who want to support their blepharoplasty results with improved skin quality. Results develop gradually as collagen production increases, creating a firmer, smoother, and more refreshed appearance without surgery or significant downtime.

Thermal Renewal

Tixel C for Eye Rejuvenation

Controlled thermal energy to improve crepey texture, fine lines, and skin quality around the eyes with minimal downtime.

Tixel C is a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatment that uses controlled thermal energy to improve skin texture, firmness, and overall quality around the delicate eye area. By creating a precise healing response in the skin, Tixel C helps stimulate collagen production and support gradual skin renewal. This can be especially helpful for patients with crepey skin, fine lines, mild laxity, dullness, or uneven texture around the upper and lower eyelids.

At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Houston, Tixel C treatments can be customized based on each patient’s skin quality, concerns, and aesthetic goals. For patients who are not ready for eyelid surgery or who want to improve the skin around the eyes without surgery, Tixel C may offer a gentle yet effective option. It can also be used as part of a broader eye rejuvenation plan with treatments such as chemical peels, dermal fillers, or RF skin tightening to help create a smoother, brighter, and more refreshed appearance.
