What Is Gynecomastia?
Gynecomastia or “male breasts” refers to a medical condition that commonly affects men and boys, in which the breasts become over-developed, exhibiting an accumulation of excess fatty tissue in the pectoral region, and in some cases increased development of glandular tissue. Gynecomastia may affect one or both breasts and, while not a serious medical condition, often produces feelings of insecurity and compromised self-esteem in teen boys and men. Some men and boys may avoid certain social settings, such as swimming or playing sports, due to embarrassment caused by gynecomastia.
What Causes Gynecomastia?
The causes of Gynecomastia may include genetics, hormonal imbalances, obesity, or the use of certain medications. The condition may be a purely cosmetic issue in many cases, but a qualified physician must evaluate patients in order to rule out any potentially serious underlying medical conditions prior to treating the cosmetic issue.
Male breast reduction, or treatment for gynecomastia, can eliminate the problem of excess fat in the pectoral region, sculpting a more toned and contoured chest. The procedure may be performed surgically, or in less serious cases, using liposuction. In some cases, the nipple must be moved or reconstructed. Most patients after undergoing treatment for gynecomastia report improvements in their physical appearance, the way their clothes fit, and their self-confidence.
Gynecomastia Surgery Consultation and Planning
Once you make up your mind to undergo the gynecomastia procedure, choose a plastic surgeon who has plenty of experience with this procedure to help you prepare for the procedure and advise you of any other procedures you may want to combine with the gynecomastia treatment in order to achieve a fully satisfying new body contour. At your intake consultation with Dr. Bachilo, she will answer all your questions and inform you of the risks and benefits, as well as possible complications that may arise from this surgery. As with any cosmetic procedure, it is important that you maintain realistic expectations regarding the outcome of the procedure. Prepare yourself ahead of time by viewing several before and after pictures of the procedure so you can see what you can reasonably expect. Dr. Bachilo will advise you to refrain from smoking, as well as temporarily suspending any blood-thinning medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, and NSAIDs as you prepare for your surgery. She will also perform a thorough examination of your breast tissue and recommend the most appropriate treatment options for you. We are located 27 minutes from Pasadena and 17 minutes from Missouri City.
The Male Breast Reduction Procedure
Dr. Bachilo will assess your condition and outline the various options available for treating gynecomastia, including liposuction, surgical excision, and skin tightening techniques. Together, the two of you will decide which options are most suitable for your condition. If it turns out that your case of gynecomastia is simply a product of weight gain and accumulation of body fat, liposuction may be sufficient to treat your condition. Surgical excision treatment may instead be indicated only if you also have excess development of glandular tissue in the pectoral region, or if you will need to have excess skin removed during the procedure.
If you do require surgery, it will be performed using a neatly camouflaged incision located on the edge of the nipple and areola area. Occasionally, the nipple may be repositioned in order to create a more attractive and proportional appearance. Some patients may benefit from a combined treatment that includes both liposuction and excision surgery to remove glandular tissue and excess skin, producing a taut, streamlined chest that emphasizes a more masculine-looking appearance.
Male Breast Reduction Recovery
Immediately after the procedure, your chest may feel sore and swollen, and you must either wear a compression garment or have your chest wrapped in compression bandages to reduce swelling and support delicate tissue. Drains may also be positioned at each breast to allow for drainage of blood or fluid after surgery. Dr. Bachilo will provide detailed instructions for post-operative care, and will also prescribe pain medications to help you manage any pain or discomfort resulting from the procedure. Patients are typically able to return to work a few days after the procedure, but you must avoid heavy lifting, bending, running, and any strenuous physical activity for a period of about 2-3 weeks while your body heals. You may resume regular exercise, including strength training, weightlifting, and contact sports, after a period of 4 to 6 weeks, but remember to wear proper protective garments.
Male Breast Reduction Results
You will see immediate visible results when you get up from the procedure; however, it will take some time for all of the swelling from the procedure to fully subside. While the gynecomastia procedure, when performed surgically, leaves very minimal, subtle scars, these will naturally fade away over time. In general, it may take up to six months to fully see and appreciate the results of your gynecomastia treatment. Fat removed from the pectoral region is removed permanently; however, the problem may re-develop in cases where the cause is diet or medication if those underlying conditions are not also addressed.
