What causes spider veins?
Spider veins develop when the blood in your veins pools just beneath the skin’s surface. Spider veins may be caused by genetics, obesity, hormone fluctuations, or trauma. They often affect pregnant women and people whose work requires sitting or standing for long periods. Many patients report that spider veins increase with age.
Should I be concerned about spider veins?
While spider veins generally do not pose a serious problem, not all veins are equal, and it’s possible that spider veins could indicate an underlying problem in your circulatory system, such as a blood clot. For this reason, it is best to not ignore spider veins and to seek the advice of an experienced physician that can professionally evaluate your condition.
If you have spider veins, you should pay attention to certain signs that may indicate something more serious developing beneath the surface. For example, if your spider veins begin to feel hot or swollen, or if they suddenly appear more red than usual, you should seek a professional medical evaluation. If you experience pain in your legs, or if the skin surrounding your spider veins changes its color or appearance, these are signals that you should see a doctor to make sure that there is no underlying blood clot or other problem causing these symptoms.
At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa, Dr. Bachilo has extensive experience treating spider veins in her Houston-area patients. She will perform a thorough physical examination and examine the condition of your veins. If she suspects an underlying problem, you will be referred to a trusted vascular surgeon who will order an ultrasound procedure to screen for any hidden problems. If the vascular surgeon detects a potential problem, it’s likely that they will also perform a venogram, in which a special dye is injected into the affected vein to help the doctor identify blood clots or other underlying conditions.
What is the EVLT Spider Vein Treatment and how does it work?
Once it is determined that your spider veins are merely a cosmetic problem, Dr. Bachilo can provide an EVLT treatment to diminish their appearance and leave your skin smooth and clear. EVLT is the acronym for Endovenous Laser Ablation Therapy. This minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure is an advanced new treatment for spider veins and small varicose veins.
EVLT works by directing light from a laser fiber beam to the inside of the vein wall, where it cauterizes the vein wall and eventually dissolves it. The procedure requires a minuscule incision in the affected vein through which Dr. Bachilo inserts a very thin laser fiber that delivers direct heat. This heat causes the vein to break down and eventually collapse.
EVLT treatments typically take under an hour to perform. The procedure requires no sutures, no downtime, and no pain, and there are no scars to worry about. Most patients are able to return to normal activities immediately following the treatment.
