What Is Xeomin?
Xeomin® is a neurotoxin injection treatment used to soften frown lines formed by muscular contractions associated with certain facial expressions. The FDA has approved Xeomin to treat muscular disorders such as cervical dystonia, which produces involuntary spasms of the neck muscles, and blepharospasm, which causes involuntary twitching of the eyelid and softens moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows in healthy adults.
How Does Xeomin Work?
Xeomin is a neurotoxin that reduces muscular contractions in areas where those contractions cause wrinkles by inhibiting the release of chemicals that trigger these muscle contractions, softening lines, and wrinkles as facial muscles become more relaxed. Xeomin is most often used cosmetically in the forehead region, specifically between the brows, to soften vertical and horizontal lines. Unlike dermal filler treatments that fill in wrinkles, Xeomin only affects muscle tissue. Therefore it has no direct capacity to fill in deep wrinkles that have already formed, although it will naturally soften wrinkles and lines over time. Xeomin may also be combined with other treatments or procedures to provide a more comprehensive improvement.
How Do I Know if I Am a Good Candidate for Xeomin?
If you have frown or worry lines in the forehead, vertical or horizontal forehead lines, crow’s feet, or laugh lines around your eyes, or a combination of all of these, Xeomin injections can make you look more relaxed, less tired, and less stressed. If you’ve tried Botox or Dysport and found that it didn’t work or didn’t last as long as expected, you may achieve better results with Xeomin. Xeomin is not recommended if you are pregnant, have an infection at the treatment site, or have a condition such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome. If you have a history of any neurological condition or temporary paralysis or have experienced the loss of vision or double vision, you may not be a good candidate for Xeomin injections. Dr. Bachilo may recommend an alternate treatment.
How Long Do Xeomin Results Last?
As with Botox and Dysport, Xeomin injections typically produce results that last about 3 to 4 months. The length of time between treatments becomes longer with regular use, and some patients see results lasting as long as six months. Many patients who have also used other neurotoxins report that Xeomin begins to take effect more quickly than its alternatives, which may take anywhere from one to 10 days to deliver visible effects.
