Earlobe Repair: A Simple Fix for a Common Problem
Torn earlobes or earlobes with stretched out piercings are actually a pretty common problem that we see frequently in our practice and are easily repaired in our office. Most earlobe deformities or injuries are caused by piercings, wearing heavy earrings, or unconscious tugging on the earrings, which can eventually stretch and tear the delicate skin of the earlobe. Luckily, ear lobe repair can fix the problem and restore the shape of your earlobes.
When to Consider Earlobe Repair
You may wish to have your earlobe or earlobes repaired when you begin to experience the following:
- Split or torn earlobe
- Enlarged piercing hole in the earlobe that appears as a vertical line
- Injury or trauma to the earlobe
A split or tear in your earlobe not only looks unattractive, but it may also make it difficult or impossible for you to wear earrings. Luckily, a simple cosmetic treatment can repair a damaged or torn earlobe fairly quickly and without much fuss. At Glamour Plastic Surgery and Med Spa in Houston, led by noted plastic surgeon Dr. Olga Bachilo, earlobe repair is a common procedure that we perform frequently on many patients, restoring their ability to once again wear your favorite earrings.
Earlobe Repair Technique/Procedure
This is a simple procedure usually performed under local anesthesia with no sedation necessary. The procedure normally takes under one hour to complete in the comfort of our office. The severity of the tear or injury to the earlobe will determine the type of repair required. We may use small flaps to redesign the earlobe or simply suture together the two sides of a split lobe. We normally use absorbable sutures that are easily camouflaged thanks to their tiny size. Dr. Bachilo carefully sutures the earlobe using specific techniques to minimize scar formation.
The stitches may be removed or may dissolve on their own in about a week. If you’ve been avoiding wearing your favorite earrings because their heavyweight makes your earlobes sag and tear, earlobe repair may be the ideal solution for you. Additionally, other treatments, such as dermal filler injections to augment volume and firmness in the earlobe, may also be recommended in order to make your earlobes strong enough to continue wearing any earrings of your choice.
Recovery After Earlobe Repair
There is little downtime after earlobe repair and Tylenol is usually sufficient to alleviate any discomfort caused by the procedure. You can plan to return to normal activities immediately following your treatment session. In most cases, we use dissolvable sutures, so it will not be necessary to return for suture removal. In most cases, Dr. Bachilo can also re-pierce your ear if you wish. In some cases, the earlobe will have to heal for a few months before it can be re-pierced and earrings can be worn comfortably.
