What Are Sun Spots or Age Spots?
A common complaint among our Houston-area patients at Glamour Plastic Surgery and Medical Spa is the appearance of liver spots or age spots that look like brown coffee stains on the skin. Melasma, which appears as brown patches on the skin’s surface, and solar lentigos, which are dark moles that appear primarily in areas that receive heavy sun exposure and ultraviolet (UV) light, respond well to a variety of treatments.
When the ultraviolet light hits the skin, it can speed up melanin production and lead to sun spots, age spots, and dark spots.
They are typically harmless, but it’s still important to have the spots checked to ensure they aren’t skin cancer. Especially if you develop age spots after being exposed to the sun or using tanning beds.
Radio Frequency Skin Resurfacing
This gentle yet effectively powerful treatment uses advanced radiofrequency technology to gently lift away the skin’s outermost layer, removing those freckles, moles, and surface spots with it. Venus Viva RF Skin Resurfacing also triggers collagen production, which provokes a gradual improvement of skin firmness as more collagen is produced in the weeks following treatment. This treatment may be used on the face and the neck, décolleté, the arm, and the hands. If you begin noticing age spots, this may be the perfect treatment for you.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial (Photorejuvenation)
The IPL Photofacial is recommended for people who have uneven skin pigmentation, freckles, and sunspots, or other flaws or marks on the skin’s surface, such as acne scars and patches of discoloration. The IPL is similar to laser treatments or laser therapy, but instead of using lasers, it uses the precision of intense pulsating light beams to lift away the skin’s outermost layer, along with its freckles, marks, and other surface imperfections. You may have slight redness after treatment, but that will fade. Increased collagen production also provides gradual improvements that continue for weeks following treatment.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion is a treatment that gently exfoliates the skin’s surface using an exact sanding instrument, triggering increased collagen production and exposing a healthy new layer of fresh skin cells. Microdermabrasion can be highly effective at treating age spots and improving the skin’s tone and evens out pigmentation for a smoother, cleaner appearance.
Chemical Peels
Chemical peels use a natural plant-based chemical solution to peel away the top layer of skin, surface imperfections. and dead skin cells, much like a sunburn peels away the surface layer of skin. Chemical peels produce temporary effects and must be repeated regularly to maintain results. They may fade age spots or completely erase them.
Microneedling With or Without PRP
Microneedling works similarly to skin resurfacing. Instead of gently scraping off the skin’s surface layer, microneedling gently punctures the skin with microneedles to stimulate collagen production and produce tighter and firmer skin with fewer surface irregularities. When enhanced with Platelet-Rich-Plasma (PRP) therapy, this treatment helps produce a more even skin tone and texture and further treat age spots.
